Around Bucharest – my first Saturday Part 2

Part 2 – Muzeul Taranului Roman (Peasant Museum)

Well I certainly didn’t need to tell my driver to hurry-up! It was almost a “white-knuckle” ride round to the Piata Victoriei where I headed (suitably relieved) for the Peasant Museum. Very cheap to get in (6 RON) until they spot your camera and ask for the “camera tax” – a relatively whopping 50 RON!

Lot’s of interesting exhibits here albeit with an emphasis on peasant dress.

There is a complete peasant house on display, but with a “cut-away” roof space to illustrate the storage options.

Also on display some massive “Carding Combs” for producing all the clothes and a fascinating “skeleton” of a windmill.

Certainly the most intriguing item is a Transylvanian church which at first sight looks like the remains of a boat.

Interestingly the altar stone is an upturned Roman temple stone that appears to have come from a temple of Minerva at some point. Unfortunately while I know Minerva was an important Roman goddess my Latin skills just aren’t what they were 30 years ago!

There is a marvelous church altar screen here covered in iconography.

Finally and slightly incongruously there is a section relating to the recent past containing a “Rogues Gallery” of paintings, busts and statues!
