Around Bucharest – my first Sunday Part 2

Part 2 – Museul Satului

Alongside Herastrau Park sits the Museul Satului or Village Museum. This is an outdoor museum of building types from around the country transported to the museum and rebuilt (St. Fagans in Bucharest!).

The houses and outbuildings are primarily 19th century and a real mix of styles externally although rather similar in internal décor. There are however two magnificent 18th century wooden churches.

Jurilovca house originally built in 1898 (Eastern Romania).

Courtyard with hen house and summer stove.

Guest Room.

Main Living room and bedroom with the kitchen beyond.

Store-house and stable.

Castranova house originally built in the 19th century (Southern Romania).

Yes this house is largely built below ground and no I don’t know who the “cheeky” girls are! House in the centre with a maize barn to the rear.

The rear shot shows how the roof is barely above ground.

Kitchen in the centre of the house with a single room to each side.

Dragus house and barn built in the 19th century (Transylvania).

House, interestingly with a tile roof while..

..the barn is thatched.
Barn interior.

Rapciuni church from Neamt originally built in 1773 (Transylvania).

All the exterior walls are decorated with biblical scenes.

Turea church originally built in the 18th century (Transylvania).

Church entrance.

Decoration in outer vestibule.

Altar screen.

This really is just a very small selection of what is on show at this museum, it was off to the shop for me for a few souvenirs (I bought exactly ZERO carpets for a change!) and postcards for the relatives. A walk home for me on aching feet via the Coffee Shop following a chance encounter with colleagues – and the evening spent finding a blog site to start this little project!

ENJOY!
